Traditional Clothing of Dadra and Nagar Haveli for Men and Women


Dadra and Nagar is a union territory of India, located in the middle of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The historical place has a lot of things to explore. Traditional dresses of Dadra and Nagar are also tremendous showing their unique designs, vibrant looks, beautiful embroideries, and other essential features. Dadra and Nagar is also influenced by the Portugal culture. So, mixed clothing can be seen in this western part of India.


Dadra and Nagar Haveli is in the western coastal area of India that shows ethnic culture of its various tribes. Some of the major tribes of Dadra and Nagar Haveli include Varli, Kokna and Dodhia. Most of the population of this area is tribal.

Traditional Clothing of Dadra and Nagar Haveli for Men: 

Varlis tribe’s men wear a loin-cloth, a turban and a waist-long coat.

Men of Dhodia tribe cover themselves with a long Dhoti, shirt and waistcoat. Varli is the most common headgear that is available in various colours and shapes. Dhodia men also wear beautiful ornaments like encircling their waist, silver chains and earnings.

Men of Kokna tribe wear Dhoti, shirt and waist coat along with a turban.

Traditional Clothing of Dadra and Nagar Haveli for Women: 

Varlis tribe’s women drape   Lugden around their waist that goes down to the knee. Padar is also a piece of cloth worn by women of Varlis tribe. Females love to put on white and silver ornaments.

Women of Dodhia tribe women like to drape themselves in a blue sari. They also put on metal bangles, beads necklaces, Kadas (a type of bangle) and other ornaments. The costumes of Dodhia tribe are similar to other tribes of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Women of Kokna tribe wear sari of in various colours. Tattoo painting is also very popular in this tribe.

Both men and women flaunt beautiful costumes in a wide range of colours, designs and patterns. It is magnificent to see these people in so many stunning outfits.
